 With earth preservation being a hot button topic nowadays, seems like new "earth friendly" products are popping up everywhere... but I'm sure none of them taste as good as Endangered Species Chocolates. 

Eating this chocolate is actually good for the environment, because their facilities are 100% wind powered and by implementing the use of energy efficient HVAC and electricial components, Endangered Species Chocolates has been able to save over 40% on their annual energy usage. Other green features of their facilities include, water efficient equipment and a revamped labeling system which cut scrap down to 2%, which means less trees being cut down and less waste going into our waterways. 

I never need an excuse to eat chocolate, but this is chocolate you don't have to feel guilty about eating.

I love that this company makes the extra effort to assure that the farmers get fair treatment. Too many times, we use a product or eat a food, without any regard to where it comes from, who makes it or if it's even safe... Not with Endangered Species.  

Not only do they make sure they use the most efficient processes and products, they also give back to the environment. 10% of net profits of every single bar sold  goes back to organizations who support species conservation, habitat preservation and humanity efforts around the world.

Need another reason to eat Endangered Species Chocolates? Would it help if I told you that eating chocolate can be good for you? Scientists have learned that eating dark chocolates in small quantities can actually promote heart health, help cells resist damage from free radicals and can help you better cope with stress.

So all that is fine and good, but what about the taste? One word.... AMAZING! This chocolate tastes like chocolate should. It doesn't taste all fake and full of junk. When I was approached to review this book, I went to the website to see exactly what it was all about, what I found was the truly heartbreaking story of a young mother who was fighting an un-winnable battle with Melanoma that had metastasized to her brain.

 Shelly Rekalaitis, was a 35 year old mother of four children all under the age of five. When Shelly realized she was not going to be around to see her children and for them to see and know her, she knew she had to do something to keep her presence alive. 

From that tragic inspiration came a line of books that anyone can appreciate. The "I Want You To Know Me" series is a collection of books designed to give the reader an intimate look at who you are, what you like or don't, all your physical characteristics and some quirky things about you that the reader might not have known, in an easy to fill in question and answer format.

Some of the questions from "I want YOU to Know ME, Love Mom"  are...

"Do you have a widow's peak?"

"What makes you smile?"

"Are you messy or neat?"

"Do you have a nervous habit?"

 The "I Want You to Know Me, Love Grandma" book would make a really special Christmas gift for your Grandma, imagine how much interesting info you could glean from spending an afternoon filling out all the questions in the book with her. You might even find out some good juicy family gossip you never knew before. 

I think this is a gift you really should give to yourself, for your kid's sake. Everyone always wishes they'd had these little tidbits of info about their Mom, unfortunately, usually by the time we get around to it, it's too late to go back and collect it.

I recently saw this graphic on someone's Facebook page and it really got me thinking about all the things we buy for our family members during the holidays, without even thinking about where they came from or under what conditions they were made.

I saw a report on Nightline a few weeks ago, when the newest "Ithing" came out. iPad, iPod, iPhone... whatever the heck it was. Anyway, the report was about the living conditions of the poor young people who actually make the idevices. It was shocking to say the least.

 *These young people live in small cramped dorms, sometimes up to eight in a room (in bunkbeds), where they are unable to use any sort of "power draining" appliances, such as tea kettles, hot plates or laptops. 

These workers are often publicly humiliated as a form of punishment for not meeting quota or for any reason their higher ups might deem necessary. Punishments such as, cleaning toilets, sweeping the lawn or writing "confession letters", which are displayed or read aloud to other employees.

The thing that stood out most and stuck with me the longest, was the rate of suicide among these young people. It got so bad, they had to put mesh screens on the windows and put up tarps under the windows, to disuade the employees from jumping out the windows to their death below.

Not only are foreign workers treated badly, in a lot of instances, but their products are shabby and contain chemicals that have been deemed unlawful for use in products here in the USA. I recently had the opportunity to experience Terri Michele's Shenandoah perfume for myself.  

 

 

 

Shenandoah is a fresh, clean, floral scent. It has a green earthy tone. I noticed top notes of licorice with mid notes of citrus and a nice finish that was just clean and light. I think this scent would wear best in spring or summer, as it is very light and fresh. Personally, I like to wear deeper, more substantial scents in fall and winter.

 Overall, I think this scent is really nice and I am looking forward to putting it into rotation next summer.

Ever since I can remember, I've been in love with scents. When I was younger, my cousin had one of those D.I.Y. perfume kits, Barbie I think it was, and every time I went to her house, I begged to play with it.

 Each bottle in the kit contained a different scent and you could mix them together to make your own perfume and name it and color the label and it was oh so AWESOME... except all the perfumes smelled like rosewater and old Grandma.

Since then my taste in perfumes has become much more refined... thank goodness.

I recently had the opportunity to check out some really nice perfume oils from The Fragrance Shop.  

I love that all these scents are oil based and contain zero alchol or fillers! There are several advantages to using oil over alcohol based perfumes, but  the length of wear and strength of scent are the two main reasons I prefer this form of perfume to others.

 For this review, I chose 2 men's scents, 2 women's scents and 2 "teen" scents.

The Happy type for men was AMAZING! It was just like the original, except the scent lasted way longer and was more intense than the original, alcohol based perfume. As was the Ralph for men I chose. If you put both these fragrance oils next to the original, you would not be able to tell which is which.

 The Burberry Body for women was so spot on, and I would definitely be able to tell a cheap knock off from the original, as this is one of my absolute favorite scents. The Eternity for women was really nice, more of a summery scent, as it's more flowery and I like to wear more dark spices in the fall and winter.

 The Pink Sugar and Very Vanilla scents that were sent to me were so sweet and heavenly. I loved the Pink Sugar, it smelled like if cotton candy and a vanilla bean had a baby and you squeezed that sugary little baby into a bottle... yep, it's like that. When I wore it, I kept smelling something yummy, then I realized it was just me. This would definitely be a hit with the younger crowd.

With cold weather comes a myriad of skin issues, from rough dry hands to dry face and the ever present dry chapped lips. I'm always looking for a good solution when it comes to protecting and healing dry skin and Carmex has a product for all these needs.

Carmex has a brand new product just in time for the "winter lips" that inevitably affect us all.

 

Carmex Everyday Lip Conditioner is like lotion for your lips. The consistency of this product is very light, it's not the usual Carmex you're probably used to. It also has a nice orange flavor. It has a bit of the Carmex tingle you're used to, but not the menthol taste that can be kind of off putting, in the original Carmex lip treatment. It is smooth, not gloppy or glossy and absorbs quickly. Since it's matte, you can use it as a base for lipstick.

Carmex lip conditioner has 13 skin loving moisturizers and feels amazing on my lips. I love that it's not heavy and goopy, like some other lip products can be.

Here's some info I found on their site that explains exactly how it works...

 

• Your skin’s lipid bilayer is made up of two layers of fatty acids; its job is to help keep moisture in the skin. Our Lip Conditioner includes lanolin, which replicates the way the lipid bilayer in your skin retains moisture.

I've been using this product for about a week and I can definitely tell a difference in the look and texture of my lips and it was an immediate change, it didn't take days or weeks of use. They are not dry and cracked like they tend to be at this time of year and the orange flavor is a nice change from the usual heavy menthol flavor associated with Carmex products. How do you turn an ordinary box of crackers into something a  little bit "ritzier"?

Three words.....

Savory Saltine Seasoning.

Savory Saltine Seasoning is exactly what it sounds like... A seasoning for your crackers. Yes, I know, it sounds like a joke. I thought the same thing when I was approached to review this product, and after a quick Google, I found out it's real. So, Me, being the "rebel" that I am, accepted the challenge. I was fully expecting to be less than impressed with this product, but I admit, I really like it. It is a zesty mix between ranch and BBQ flavor and it really does turn a plain ol' cracker into a really good snack. 

So, how does it work?

It's really simple, you get a large Ziploc bag, Savory Saltine seasoning, some oil (the pkg calls for canola, I used olive and it turned out fine), and a box of Saltine crackers (I used Town House and again, nothing in my house exploded, substitutions are ok)

 

I wasn't sure how well I was going to like this product, so I started out using only one sleeve of crackers. The directions on the package said to use five tsp of seasoning and 1/2 cup of oil. I definitely think you could cut the oil by a Tbsp or two and still be fine. So you add the oil and seasoning to the bag, dissolve the seasoning and add the crackers, turn 'em a few times and you're done. I took mine out of the bag after about an hour and put them on a paper towel to let all the wonderful yumminess soak in. The package says to let them rest for at least 4 hrs up to overnight... I made it exactly seven and a half minutes before I tried one...Don't judge me. I was delightfully surprised, it was actually good. Like if a cracker and a BBQ chip met, fell in love and had a baby, then you ate that little cracker/chip baby, yeah, it's like that. 

But wait!

There's more....

You can also use the seasoning in other dishes too. I think this would taste great in a chicken burger. Add a bit of it to the ground chicken, before making the patties then add a little buffalo sauce and fry 'em up, top with a few crumbles of bleu cheese on top of an onion roll... OMG!!! Or even in a meatloaf, to give it a bit of smoky flavor. The website has a recipe for steak fajitas using the Savory Saltine Seasoning that sounds amazing, although I would probably substitute chicken for the steak and sweet yellow peppers for the green bell peppers and add some mushrooms and shredded queso and some homemade guacamole... it would be amazing. YES! I know what I'm having for lunch.
